  1.                            Alternate Floppy Formats

  4. The  advanced  Format  utility  (the  1.3/2.0  version  only) allows a
  5. different  format  to  be  forced on an MS-DOS floppy disk.  Forcing a
  6. format on other disk types such as AmigaDOS will not succeed.

  8. Forcing a format is optional.  Normally the Format utility will format
  9. the  disk  to  the  optimal size.  If you can, don't force a alternate
  10. format.   If  you  do  need to force a format, make sure you know what
  11. type  of disk you are planning to use.  Forcing a format will override
  12. disk size checking.

  14. Floptical  drive  users  may  need  to force a disk format because the
  15. software  mechanisms  for  checking the size of the media in the drive
  16. are  not  available.  Follow one of the two procedures detailed in the
  17. section "Floptical Users" for formatting disks.

  19. We  recommend  that if you must force a format, that you use the icons
  20. on  the  product  disk.  Installed versions can be used if the 1.3/2.0
  21. version of the Format command is installed.

  25. Alternate Format Types
  26.  
  27. The   following   are   the  types  of  alternate  formats  supported.
  28. Double-click  on  the  icon  that  matches the format desired.  Do not
  29. modify  any  of  the  ToolTypes  in  the  icon.  This may result in an
  30. improper format.

  32. MSDOS_720K.Format
  33. -----------------
  34. This is the standard format for an MS-DOS 3 1/2" low density disk.  If
  35. you  are  using the standard Amiga drive don't use this icon but rather
  36. use the Format utility instead.

  38. This  format  is useful for floptical drive users because the software
  39. cannot sense when a low density disk is in the drive.
  40.  
  41. MSDOS_1.44M.Format
  42. ------------------
  43. This  is  the  standard format for an MS-DOS 3 1/2" high density disk.
  44. If  you are using the standard Amiga high density drive don't use this
  45. icon but rather use the Format utility instead.  If you do not have an
  46. Amiga high density drive, forcing this format will fail.

  48. This  format  is useful for floptical drive users because the software
  49. cannot sense when a high density disk is in the drive.

  51. Floptical_20M.Format
  52. --------------------
  53. This is the format for a MS-DOS 20 Meg floptical disk.  This format is
  54. not a hard drive format but a compatible floppy format.

  56. If  you  do  not  have  a  floptical  drive,  forcing this format will
  57. probably fail.
  58.  
  59. This  format  is useful for floptical drive users because the software
  60. cannot sense when a floptical disk is in the drive.

  62. ATARI_720K.Format
  63. -----------------
  64. This  is the standard format for an Atari ST 3 1/2" low density disk.
  65. Use this if you must but most Atari-STs can read the standard MS-DOS
  66. 720K format.

  68. MSDOS_360K.Format
  69. -----------------
  70. This is the standard format for an MS-DOS 5 1/4" low density disk.  If
  71. you  are using the standard Amiga drive don't use this icon but rather
  72. use the Format utility instead.

  76. Floptical Users
  77.  
  78. Formatting with the floptical drive may require forcing a disk format.
  79. This  is  becasue  the floptical cannot properly sense the size of the
  80. unformatted  disk  in  the drive.  There are two ways to format in the
  81. floptical drive.  
  82.  
  83. One:   Insert  a  preformatted  MS-DOS disk in the drive with the same
  84. formatted  size  as you want to format.  If you want to format a 1.44M
  85. disk,  for  example,  insert  a  preformatted MS-DOS 1.44M disk in the
  86. drive  first.   Then,  execute the "Format" program.  Proceed with the
  87. program  until  you  come the requester that says "Ok to format volume
  88. ...  " then insert the actual disk to be formatted and proceed.

  90. Two:     Double-click    on   the   format   project   icon   in   the
  91. ":system/Alt_Formats"  drawer  that corresponds to the desired format.
  92. For  example,  double-click on the "MSDOS_720K.Format" icon to 'force'
  93. the format of the disk to 720K.  Proceed through the format.

  95. Choose the method that makes you comfortable.  Experimentation is your
  96. best teacher.
